(pop. 325,682), the capital and one of the
largest cities of New Zealand, one of the country's chief seaports
and manufacturing centers. It lies along the harbor of Port Nicholson,
on the southern coast of the North Island. Wellington and the
surrounding area make up one of New Zealand's most highly populated
regions. Named after the first Duke of Wellington, Arthur
Wellesley, British soldier and statesman who was known as The
Iron Duke. He became famous as the general who overcame the armies
of the French Emperor Napoleon I in Spain and Portugal and helped
defeat Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Later, Wellington
became a leader of the Tory Party and served as prime minister
from 1828 to 1830.
Wellington was the center place

City and district in North Yorkshire,
N England, at the confluence of the Ouse and Foss rivers, one
of England's largest provincial cities from the Middle Ages until
the Industrial Revolution of the 1700's and early 1800's. Romans
founded York and called it Eboracum. In the 7th cent., St. Paulinus,
the first archbishop of York, was consecrated. In the 8th cent.,
York was one of the most famous educational centers in Europe.
Many notable medieval structures remain in York. The city is
famous for its museums, like the National Railway Museum and
the Viking Museum. York Minster Cathedral is one of the finest
