FACTS & TIDBITS:

From The Other Side of Viggo Mortensen by Paul Young, VLife, Oct. 2003

This self-portrait was shot on the outskirts of a small town called Tamdacht, near Morocco, where Mortensen was working on Disney's Hidalgo. Now, he says, when he looks at the picture, it takes him right back. "That's the beauty of photography it can evoke so much."

Tamdacht 11 came from a recent trip to the Sahara desert where he was shooting Disney's Hidalgo. He used an old Leica, one of his favorite cameras, and snapped the single take around dusk. As soon as we saw it, it became clear this was the cover.
