WES sleeps. He wakes up to a sound and raises his head. It's KAREN pulling a shopping cart with some stuff and the huge suitcase on the top. She takes the suitcase aside and starts to fill the fridge. WES is observing her. When she looks at him he pretends to be asleep, but still watches her with one eye. She comes closer to him smiling, sits down on the bed's side.
KAREN: Hi.
WES: (smiling at her) Hi.
KAREN: (apparently not sure what to do) I'll make you a
breakfast.
WES: I'm not hungry.
KAREN: (smiling) Okay, I'll eat alone.
She wants to go but WES grabs her arm and pulls her back. They kiss.
WES: I've missed you.
KAREN: I've missed you too.
They kiss again.
WES: (hugging her) It seemed like ages to me while you were away.
Another kiss, she takes her clothes off. Adult content follows.
KAREN: I can't breath, Wes.... The sand hurts...
WES: I can't live without you.
KAREN: Not so hard...
As they are reaching climax, there is an explosion in the background. It throws a cloud of sand in the air, the dust covers the sight.
KAREN: What was that?! We're gonna get killed!
WES: (continuing the adult behavior) I don't care.
KAREN: (still scared) Wes...
WES: Just hold me...
She holds him.
WES is sitting at the table, reading a newspaper. KAREN prepares herself for some exercising. In the background two men in suits are arguing. KAREN looks at them.
KAREN: Who's there? Bernie?
WES looks briefly at them showing no interest at all.
WES: No, It's Jameson and Tully.
KAREN: Tully came back?
WES: I guess so.
KAREN: He wasn't supposed to be back...
WES: Well, he is...
KAREN: It's strange...
WES: (reaching for his coffee cup) Yep...
The men in the background start to fight.
KAREN: Look! They're fighting!
WES: (still reading the paper) They're always fighting.
KAREN: You should stop them.
WES: Why?
KAREN: You just should.... do you think they're fighting
because of the stock market?
WES: Could be.
KAREN: (standing up) Okay, you wash up, I'll go exercise.
Have to burn calories.
WES: (finally looking at her) Making love burns calories.
KAREN: Not really. Other muscles work
She turns the TV on and does aerobics following the program. The men are still fighting. WES starts to clean up the table. KAREN looks at the fighting men, finally stops exercising and goes to them. WES washes dishes in the kitchen. The water heater makes some strange noises, we cannot see if the water is flowing, but the sound WES makes scrubbing the plates is more like sand on metal.
The fighting men are JAMESON and TULLY. JAMESON tries to choke
TULLY who is kneeling and trying to free himself from his
grip.
JAMESON: (to KAREN, smiling) Hi!
KAREN: (curious) Hi! What are you doing?
JAMESON: Taking care of some business. Nothing special.
And you?
The both men are still struggling while the careless dialog goes on.
KAREN: I was exercising.
JAMESON: How are you?
KAREN: I'm fine, how are you?
JAMESON: (still choking TULLY and smiling at KAREN) I'm
fine as well.
KAREN: (pointing at TULLY) But he isn't fine.
JAMESON: (looking down at TULLY) Do you think so?
KAREN: Yeah, he doesn't look too good.
WES observes the scene from his sink.
JAMESON: (cont.) It depends.
KAREN: On what?
JAMESON: On the circumstances,
KAREN: What do you mean?
JAMESON: (looking around) The weather... Do you think it's
going to rain?
KAREN: I don't think so. It hasn't rained for years.
JAMESON: It's not good for the greenery.
KAREN: There is no greenery here, only sand.
JAMESON: I know, but it isn't good anyway.
He lets TULLY go, who falls on the sand. KAREN bows above him, more curious than scared.
JAMESON: It's gonna be a beautiful day.
KAREN: I have to go.
JAMESON: I see.
KAREN: Bye.
JAMESON: Give my regards to Wes.
KAREN: (walking away) I will.
She goes to WES, still washing dishes, presses herself at his side.
KAREN: Wes...
WES: Yes. love.
KAREN: It was so weird.
WES: What?
KAREN: I went out to see Jameson. He was so weird. He sends
you greetings.
WES: Uhm. He tried to pick you up?
KAREN: No, no! Nothing like that. It was different. And
so weird. (she is visibly nervous) He acted as if nothing happened.
WES: Did anything happen?
KAREN: Of course! (starts to cry) He just killed Tully...
Suddenly WES turns to her, grabs her shoulders and shakes her.
WES: (screaming) So what?! I don't care if he killed him! They all can kill themselves. I care about you!
Cut to JAMESON standing above dead TULLY. He thinks for a while and then starts to drag the body away. At the sink KAREN is crying terrified. WES, calm again, tries to comfort her.
WES: I'm sorry, I've lost my head. Don't cry.... I'm sorry, I'm sorry...
He forces her to face him. The water heater makes weird sounds.
WES: (Hugging crying KAREN) I love you so much... Fade out.
