It's day again. The surgeons are still working.
JERRY is talking on the phone, MYRNA and MIES listening.
JERRY: No. Nothing, I swear. Maybe the furniture. (looking around) I don't see anything else. Yeah.... Of course I'll wait. Send them over.
KAREN wakes up and looks around. She notices the empty cross and runs toward it.
KAREN: (screaming) What happened to the body?!
Dr. KILLAT: Nurse?
The NURSE who was checking her makeup at a little mirror turns to him.
NURSE: Yes Doctor Killat?
Dr. KILLAT: What does she want?
NURSE: I didn't hear.
Dr. KILLAT: Go and ask her what she wants.
NURSE: Yes sir.
Dr. WAYNE: Nurse?
NURSE: Yes...
Dr. WAYNE: Maybe she needs a sedative.
NURSE: Yes.
She goes to KAREN still standing at the cross.
NURSE: What did you say?
KAREN: (showing at the cross) The body! It vanished!
NURSE: Who vanished?
KAREN: There was a man, a black man. Here.
NURSE: (perfectly calm) There? Are you sure?
KAREN: (sighing) Positive! He was dead.
NURSE: Dead... hmmm... maybe coyotes got him. They clean
a lot. (after a pause) Would you like a tranquilizer?
KAREN: No. I'm okay. Thank you, nurse.
NURSE: (smiling) Not at all.
The NURSE comes back to the doctors.
Dr. KILLAT: What did you find out?
NURSE: Not much. She saw a man.
Dr. KILLAT: Where?
NURSE: On the cross.
Dr. KILLAT: Was he okay?
NURSE: Supposedly he was dead.
Dr. KILLAT: He'd need a good operation...
JERRY approaches the table. He touches one doctor's shoulder.
JERRY: Gentlemen... Gentlemen, don't even dare to start an operation before you are sure that it can be paid for. You understand? Enough is enough.
As he talks the NURSE notices something in the desert.
NURSE: Look!
Cut to the desert. There is a movie team shooting. Guys with a big camera and microphone follow a woman in a violet dress. It looks like a strange parade.
Dr. KILLAT: I cant believe it! It's Liz!!
Dr. WAYNE: Good God, it's her!
They drop their instruments and leave the table. They kneel and lay down on a dune worshipping Liz from a distance. MYRNA and MIES soon join them.
HARRY is back again and with him J.C, Tim and Mick. He unpacks some papers from his briefcase again. One of the guys points to the side.
JIM: Hey guys, it's Liz! Can we have a look?
HARRY: Forget it. We have a job to do.
MICK: I saw her last week. She walked through the desert.
J.C.: (looking around) I think we will have to make two
trips. What do we pack up first?
HARRY: Eh, lets make it easy, start from this side.
The men notice WES still lying on the table, covered with green sheets, his chest still open.
TIM: Owww, he doesn't look too good... What a mess...
Cut to the company still worshipping Liz. KAREN has obviously joined them. MYRNA suddenly stands up and runs to the filming people. She tries to stop someone from the team.
MYRNA: Excuse me... Excuse me, what's the name of this movie? I want to see it when it comes out.Nobody pays attention to her. Cut to three men who just put WES down from the table. They start to dismantle the equipment and the furniture. HARRY is speaking in the phone.
HARRY: Hi, Harry Whites here. Listen, how is the organ market? Oww... even kidneys? Okay, sorry. Thank you.
He starts to make a list of things the other men are loading into the big yellow truck. They take everything, even the chair HARRY is sitting on.
J.C.: This is it. We have to make another round.
HARRY: Hurry. We have to finish today.
Meanwhile the movie team is gone and the worshippers turn back to the "apartment", still under impression. HARRY notices JERRY.
HARRY: Hi, Jerry! How are you?
JERRY: Did you see Liz? She is wonderful!
He hugs HARRY. They are obviously good friends. The NURSE notices WES lying on the ground.
NURSE: (kneeling down over him) What happened?
The surgeons join her, then KAREN comes.
KAREN: What's wrong with Wes?
The NURSE covers the open wound with the sheet. JERRY comes over.
JERRY: How is he?
Dr. WAYNE: He's dead.
Dr. WAYNE: I'm sorry.
NURSE: What should we do?
Dr. WAYNE: Nothing. We've done what we could.
KAREN runs away crying.
JERRY: It's okay, guys, they wouldn't pay anyway. (turning
to HARRY) Harry, why haven't you taken all the furniture?
HARRY: The regulations allow to take only half at once.
JERRY: I see. The rules... (to the surgeons) Doctor Killat,
Doctor Wayne, I want to thank you. Please go home, take a rest.
You too, nurse. (to HARRY) Harry, we should have breakfast together
soon.
HARRY: What about lunch?
JERRY: Yes, lunch. I'll call you.
He turns to MIES
JERRY: It's a desert. Until the undertakers come it's better to keep him in the fridge.
He shake hands with HARRY and leaves.
HARRY: Take care of yourself. We will get the furniture before tonight.
HARRY goes over to WES and MIES.
HARRY: May I help you?
MIES: Oh, yes, please. My hands are no good.
HARRY: (looking down at MIES's hands) You burned them?
MIES: No, no, it's just arthritis. I have to keep them
warm.
HARRY: May I make a suggestion?
MIES: What?
HARRY: If the gloves are helping against your pain you
can minimize your tax.
MIES: But they are so cheap.
HARRY: Every penny counts. I was just trying to be helpful.
They both grab WES and force him into the fridge.
An undertaker's car comes. Four men come out and unload a big pink coffin. They look quite like the Agents from before, but it is hard to say. One of them notices KAREN and MYRNA standing there, hugging one another.
UNDERTAKER: Where is the body?
MYRNA: In the fridge.
The man goes over to the fridge and opens it. The sight of WES stored in the fridge doesn't impress him at all.
KAREN dressed in black is kneeling at the open coffin. MYRNA bends over her
MYRNA: You are done. You are shaking. Take some rest, Wes's father and me will take care of the funeral.
MYRNA leads crying KAREN away. One of the sextons wants to close the coffin, but MIES stops him.
MIES: Wait, I want to say good-bye.
He kneels at the coffin.
MIES: Good bye my boy. (caressing his head) Keep well. Greet your mother from me.
He puts a golf ball on WES's chest and kisses his forehead. He cries as the sextons carry the coffin to the car. As the car leaves he follows its tracks in the sand. Suddenly there is MYRNA again, she follows him and grabs his arm.
MYRNA: I could make you warmer gloves.
They leave together. Fade out.
